Love your wood furniture...the "best" way to clean, polish and protect in one step
Years ago when I moved to Vermont I met a woman who owned a beautiful antique store in the small town of Grafton, Vermont. I had a few cherished antiques that my parents had passed along to us and had started collecting antiques on my own. I was always in awe at her collection and how beautiful her antiques looked and felt. I know that sounds strange, commenting on how her antiques felt, but bear with me. I mentioned to her that when we lived in Williamsburg, Virginia I was told that you should only use a soft cloth to dust and never use dusting products on your furniture. I like to promote products that I believe in and I don't want to slam other products on the market, so let's just say products that might rhyme with dredge. They build up over time and you lose the real beauty of the wood.
She then introduced me to a product that was made in Saxtons River, Vermont. Another sweet small town just over the hill from Grafton. I went and bought a bottle of Scand Oil and I have been a customer now for close to 25 years!
I would like to say I am a fairly good housekeeper. I feel like my home is pretty clean from top to bottom. To my surprise, when I first used Scand Oil on my wood furniture I was disgusted how dirty my cloth was. This is the beauty of this product. It cleans your furniture as you dust, giving it a beautiful luster that brings out the natural grain of the wood. It is not meant to be used with each dusting but occasionally and to "rescue" your furniture when needed. It helps restore wood, remove wax build up (if you have been using products mentioned above) and leaves the wood nourished and soft as a baby's bottom! I love it and will always have a bottle in my cleaning closet. It is non-toxic and safe for most woods.
Scand Oil is still made in Saxtons River, Vermont, and is a small second generation family business. There are a couple of ways to buy it, you can call the company directly at 802-869-2155 or purchase it online through Kilian Hardware, a real old-fashioned hardware store located in Philadelphia. See their prices below. For the average home, the 12 oz bottle will last a while.
